How to Find a Lost iPhone

Use Find My or iCloud Find Devices to locate your phone, play a sound and mark it as lost.

Quick answer: Open Find My on another Apple device, select Devices, and choose your missing iPhone. Or go to iCloud.com/find in a browser and sign in to your Apple Account. Check its map location, choose Play Sound if it may be nearby, and mark it as lost if you cannot retrieve it promptly. Never send your passcode or verification codes to someone claiming they found it.

These steps are for a phone belonging to you or one you are authorized to manage. Find My must normally have been set up before the iPhone went missing. If it was never enabled, there is no trustworthy secret tracking method you can turn on remotely after the fact. Use your carrier, account-security measures and local authorities for a suspected theft.

Find your iPhone on a map

  1. On a second iPhone, iPad or Mac signed in to your Apple Account, open Find My; alternatively use iCloud.com/find in a browser.
  2. Choose the Devices list or All Devices and select the missing iPhone. Confirm it is the right device if several phones have similar names.
  3. Look at the map and the device status. If it is online, its location may update; if offline, you might see a previous location or none at all.
  4. If the phone is believed to be at home or in a safe place nearby, tap Play Sound to help you hear it. If it is in an unsafe or unfamiliar location, do not confront anyone to retrieve it.
  5. Keep note of the approximate last-seen location and time. Treat location information as an estimate, not proof that the phone is currently at that precise point.

A powered-off, offline or shielded device may not respond right away. Apple documents different location behavior based on whether the device is connected and what Find My features were active. Do not spend money on a third-party service promising to pinpoint an iPhone without your Apple Account or permission.

Mark the iPhone as lost

In Find My, choose the missing device and find the option for Lost Mode or Mark as Lost. Follow the prompts to display a phone number and short message that someone can use to reach you. Apple’s Lost Mode locks the iPhone using its passcode and suspends Apple Pay payment cards and passes on that device. Use an alternate contact number, not the lost phone’s number if it cannot receive calls.

If the iPhone is offline, the request may wait until it can connect. You can still submit the action promptly. Keep the wording on the lock screen neutral, such as asking the finder to call a trusted alternate number. Avoid sharing a home address, a password or a reward amount that could put you at risk.

Suspect theft? Protect your account

If the phone appears stolen, report it to your carrier and ask about suspending the cellular line or SIM. Change relevant passwords if you suspect account compromise, and review your Apple Account’s trusted devices. Check with police or the appropriate authority about a report and any identifying information they need; do not go alone to a private address displayed on the map.

Apple warns that scammers may contact owners with messages claiming the missing phone was found. Apple will not contact you to announce that an iPhone has been found. Do not open suspicious recovery links, and never provide an Apple Account password, one-time code or device passcode. Go directly to Apple’s official website or apps instead of trusting a link in a random text.

Should you erase a lost iPhone?

A remote erase is a last-resort security decision, not the next automatic step after playing a sound. Erasing removes data from the device and cannot be undone. Before choosing it, consider whether you still have a realistic chance of recovering the phone and whether you have a reliable backup. Apple advises leaving the missing device on your Apple Account so its protection against unauthorized reactivation remains intact.

If you decide the risk to sensitive information outweighs the possibility of recovery, use the official Erase This Device option in Find My and read the confirmation carefully. Offline commands may take effect only when the device reconnects. Do not assume that erasing immediately makes a disconnected phone secure at a remote location.

If Find My was turned off

You cannot retroactively locate an iPhone through Find My if it was never enabled. Instead, notify the mobile carrier, change important account credentials when needed and review accounts that were signed in on the missing phone. Report theft to local authorities, retain your IMEI or serial number if available in purchase records, and monitor unusual account activity. Be skeptical of websites that ask for payment to track a phone merely from its number.

For the future, enable Find My iPhone and review its settings while you still have your device. An up-to-date backup also reduces the consequences of permanent loss, though a backup does not itself make a device trackable.

Troubleshooting

  • The iPhone does not appear in Devices: Check the Apple Account you signed in with and whether Find My was set up on that device.
  • Map shows an old location: It may be offline or out of power. Refresh later, but do not treat the old pin as a live feed.
  • Play Sound is unavailable: The device may not currently be reachable. Activate Lost Mode rather than repeatedly trying to trigger a sound.
  • Lost Mode has not activated yet: Keep the request pending and watch for status changes when the device reconnects.
  • You receive a ‘found your iPhone’ SMS: Open Find My yourself; do not enter credentials via the SMS link.

Frequently asked questions

Can I find an iPhone when it is offline?

Sometimes you can view a last-known or network-assisted location, depending on its settings and capabilities. There is no guarantee of an up-to-date map point.

Does Lost Mode erase photos?

No. Lost Mode is intended to lock and protect the device; remote erase is a separate, destructive action.

Should I remove my stolen iPhone from my Apple Account?

Do not remove it merely because it is missing. Removal can undermine the protections Apple provides against unauthorized reuse.

Can anyone find my iPhone using only the phone number?

Do not trust commercial claims of guaranteed number-only tracking. Use Apple’s authenticated Find My service and legitimate carrier or law-enforcement processes.
