How to Delete Browser History in Safari

On iPhone or iPad, open Settings → Apps → Safari → Clear History and Website Data, select the time range you want to clear and confirm.

Quick answer: On iPhone or iPad, open Settings → Apps → Safari → Clear History and Website Data, select the time range you want to clear and confirm. On Mac, open Safari → History → Clear History, choose the period and confirm. If Safari syncing is enabled with iCloud on multiple Apple devices, clearing history can also remove synchronized history on those devices. Do not use these instructions to clear Google Account Search activity or Chrome history—they are different stores.

Clearing Safari history can erase useful navigation records and site data. It does not clear website-side logs or download the removal of any saved files. If you want to keep history but remove website cookies, use Safari’s separate website-data option instead.

iPhone or iPad: clear history through Settings

  1. Open Settings → Apps → Safari on a current iPhone or iPad. Older system versions can place Safari directly in Settings.
  2. Scroll to Clear History and Website Data.
  3. Tap the control and review the timeframe before proceeding. Different iOS releases can provide different choices about history periods.
  4. Confirm Clear History. Apple’s support guidance says this clears relevant history, cache and website data but does not change AutoFill information.
  5. If you use multiple Apple devices with Safari in iCloud, consider the synchronized-history implications before you clear a long period.
  6. Open Safari afterward and verify that the expected entries are gone. A website’s own account search or browsing record is outside Safari’s local history control.

Mac: use Safari’s History menu

  1. Open Safari from the Mac account whose history you want to manage.
  2. Choose History → Clear History from the Safari menu bar.
  3. Select how far back you want to clear history using the period menu.
  4. Confirm the action. Apple notes that history deletion can include previous searches, frequently visited lists, some website permissions and lists of downloaded items, although downloaded files themselves remain.
  5. If Safari is configured through iCloud on multiple devices, Apple says your browsing history is cleared across participating devices. Do not perform this operation on a shared account without considering that effect.

Remove a specific website or keep history while deleting site data

On iPhone, Apple’s current Safari interface supports removing selected website entries from history within the Safari app; the location of the History view may differ between iOS versions. This narrower method is useful when you do not want to lose your entire browsing timeline.

If a site keeps you signed in unexpectedly, or stored site data is causing a problem, use Settings → Apps → Safari → Advanced → Website Data and inspect the site-data choices. Remove All Website Data clears stored website information and can log you out, but is not the same as a targeted history entry removal. On Mac, Safari’s Settings → Privacy → Manage Website Data is the related place to review website data, when present.

If the Clear History control is grayed out

Apple explains that Clear History and Website Data may be unavailable because no eligible data remains or because Screen Time web-content restrictions affect the setting. Check your own device’s Screen Time settings if authorized. If a device is family- or workplace-managed, ask its owner or administrator instead of attempting to bypass restrictions.

Another common mistake is opening Chrome, Firefox or a web view inside a different app and expecting the Safari cleanup to affect it. The browser used to open a page determines which local history store you need to inspect.

Privacy and recovery limits

Clearing Safari history does not erase Google Search activity stored under a Google Account, website accounts that store recent activity, server logs, or communications by your network provider. If you want to manage those records, consult the relevant service controls. Likewise, downloaded documents can remain in the Files app or Downloads folder even after their browser-history records disappear.

If you rely on iCloud Safari syncing, a deletion on one device can carry to others. The change may not be easily reversible; save vital bookmarks or links separately before clearing all history. Bookmarks and Safari history are different items, but avoid assuming every open tab or synced record is unaffected.

Troubleshooting

  • History still appears on another Apple device: Check the Apple Account and Safari iCloud synchronization status; allow normal sync to complete. Different accounts do not share history automatically.
  • The button is disabled: Review whether history exists and whether Screen Time or organizational restrictions are active.
  • A website remembers you: Site data or the website’s own account could be responsible. Inspect website data and service sign-out settings separately.
  • A downloaded file is still present: Remove that file explicitly only if you intend to delete the file itself.

Frequently asked questions

Does clearing Safari history delete bookmarks? History and bookmarks are different browser records; use caution and verify the chosen action.

Will it clear my Chrome history too? No, Chrome has separate controls.

Can a website still retain my account activity? Yes; Safari deletion is not a website-side erasure request.
